Dolton Mayor Tiffany Henyard has declared her candidacy for reelection. Despite ongoing federal investigations, the infamous mayor known as the Dolton Dictator has declared a reelection bid. The allegations include misappropriation of taxpayer funds and serious financial mismanagement. Henyard is optimistic about the campaign’s outcome.

A Controversial Tenure

Tiffany Henyard, Dolton’s youngest and first African American woman mayor, has sparked a political firestorm. Henyard was elected with more than 80% of the vote in 2021, but his first term has been marred by allegations of financial misdeeds, corruption, and taxpayer fund misuse. Some critics have dubbed her the “worst mayor in America” because of these serious charges.

Despite the controversy surrounding her administration, Henyard has announced on social media her intention to run for re-election. She declared in a Facebook post, “Attention, Attention, Attention, Attention.” I am running for reelection as Mayor of Dolton. This bold move has sparked outrage from her opponents and some community members who question her fitness for office.

Financial Mismanagement Allegations

Former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot conducted an independent investigation into Mayor Henyard, which yielded one of the most damning allegations. The investigation uncovered significant financial mismanagement under Henyard’s leadership, with Dolton’s general fund balance falling from a $5.61 million surplus in April 2022 to a staggering $3.65 million deficit by May 2024.

“What a slap in the face to everybody that resides in 60419 zip code,” said Trustee Kiana Belcher in response to the findings.

The report highlighted questionable spending practices, including large purchases on Amazon and Wayfair using village credit cards. Adding to the financial concerns, two Dolton police officers reportedly received overtime pay exceeding their annual salaries, raising further questions about the mayor’s fiscal responsibility.

Legal Troubles and Federal Scrutiny

Henyard’s problems extend beyond financial mismanagement. Both Dolton and Thornton Township, where Henyard serves as supervisor, have received federal subpoenas. The FBI is reportedly looking into allegations of misconduct in both roles. In addition, Henyard is suing several village trustees, the Dolton Park District, the village clerk, and the village administrator over a contentious village board meeting.

“I am running for reelection for Mayor, and I have no doubt that the people of Dolton will give me their overwhelming support and mandate. They know the truth, and I am committed and determined to continue fighting for my village for the next four years,” a statement from Henyard’s attorney said.

Opposition and the Road Ahead

Henyard faces stiff opposition in her re-election bid. Dolton board colleague Jason House and a “Clean House” slate of candidates have emerged to challenge her leadership. Trustee Kiana Belcher, a vocal critic of Henyard, expressed skepticism about the mayor’s re-election bid, stating, “The community does not want to continue under her leadership. I’m not shocked because I know her, definitely not shocked.”
