NJ GOP Congressman VANISHES—Missing Over a Month

Rep. Tom Kean Jr. has disappeared from Capitol Hill for over a month with zero contact, leaving Republican colleagues bewildered and concerned as Democrats line up to challenge his vulnerable swing seat this November.

Radio Silence From Capitol Hill

Kean was last seen voting on Capitol Hill on March 5. Since then, the New Jersey Republican has missed nearly 50 roll call votes with no explanation. Fellow New Jersey Republicans Reps. Chris Smith and Jeff Van Drew say they’ve called and texted repeatedly but received nothing back. Rep. Jeff Van Drew described the situation bluntly as “radio silence.” Multiple New York Republicans who work with Kean on key legislative issues report the same troubling pattern of unreturned communications.

The absence has gone largely unnoticed until this week. Rep. Don Bacon of Nebraska told reporters he didn’t realize Kean had been gone until he searched for him on the House floor Tuesday. “I was looking for him,” Bacon said Wednesday. “I didn’t know it was that long.” Even Democrats have taken notice. New Jersey Democrat Rep. Rob Menendez expressed concern, stating “It’s been a long absence. I hope he’s doing all right. But I haven’t heard anything.”

Health Issues Cited By Campaign

Bill Palatucci, a Republican National Committee member and attorney for the Kean campaign, acknowledged the congressman is dealing with “unexpected health issues” but offered no specifics. “Everyone understands from their own family experiences that people run into unexpected health issues,” Palatucci told reporters. He predicted voters would be “completely sympathetic” and claimed the absence would be “long forgotten come the fall” since it’s early in the election year.

Political Peril in Swing District

The timing couldn’t be worse for Republicans. Kean represents New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District, a critical swing seat that President Trump carried by just two points in the last presidential election. Joe Biden flipped the district in 2020, winning by four points. Democrats have identified Kean as one of their top targets this November, with four major Democratic candidates already lining up to challenge him. The prolonged absence hands opposition research teams a potent weapon while leaving constituents without representation during crucial votes. GOP leaders have not addressed Kean’s disappearance with the conference, according to multiple Republican sources.
